Advent Calendar – Dec 2

Day 2! Today’s puzzle is a palindrome sudoku called ‘Palindromic Stocking’. The family version contains standard palindromes, but the ‘full strength’ version has a bit of a twist on normal palindromes, so make sure you read the rules carefully.

If you are subscribed to the standard or family advent calendars, you’ll find links to the pdfs of today’s puzzle below.

  1. This puzzle was a bit more difficult for me, but I got there eventually. I think my primary issue was clutter from the f-puzzles interface; it hampered my scanning. The palindrome was great fun, and I really enjoyed the process of unfolding the logic behind it. The initial break in was very satisfying, even though it was relatively easy to spot. It wasn’t until the palindrome was done that I was a bit stymied, but every time I saw the next move it was a “duh” moment (just wasn’t seeing it, it wasn’t due to inherent difficulty).

I also quite like yesterday’s puzzle, and getting the initial digits was also fun. Relatively quick solve all together, and a nice easy start to the week. I really loved the bible verse quoted in the puzzle. Always one of my favorites.

I think the difference in difficulty between the junior and standard puzzles is perfect. The logic is similar enough to get my mind in the right frame of reference, without spoiling the standard puzzle at all. And the juniors are still quite good puzzles, even on their own.

Thanks for all of the effort you put into this project. It’s evident you put a lot of thought and care into it, and I’m sure I will enjoy the rest of the puzzles as they come!

  2. I had a lot of fun with this. The break-in was neat. I spotted it right off but then fumbled around trying to eliminate options. I probably missed a quicker process. Then I cruised along until I got to a weird palindrome-based bent triple that took me a bit to spot.

  3. This puzzle was a lot of fun. The break-in was neat. I spotted it right off but then stumbled for a bit while I eliminated some stuff. I probably missed a quicker path. Then I cruised along until I hit a palindrome-based bent-triple towards the end that took be a bit to spot.

  4. Great puzzles today. My son got really into the family puzzle. Whilst he’s done a few sudokus in the past, I think the 1-6 (which makes it feel like it should be easy to solve) works well with the tricky rulesets to give an experience that seems to draw him in to the challenge of solving it. Meanwhile I wasted 20 minutes because I forgot about the non-consecutive restraint on the other puzzle. Lesson learned: Always check the rules in the bottom left to ensure you’re playing fair.
